Chiropractic and the latest MRI research
On a daily basis, up to 15 million people in the US are suffering from headaches and migraines. These conditions are debilitating and can affect ones life. Many spend years searching for a magic pill to give them relief and often have to suffer through unpleasant side effects.
Many of us are unaware that Chiropractic could offer a better solution. As a child, I suffered with frequent headaches and the occasional migraine so I know these conditions all too well. My parents never knew that chiropractic might hold the answer that could have saved me the misery that I was experiencing.
The fact is that Chiropractors have been helping headaches and migraine headaches with a high success rate since the early 1900s. Unfortunately, you will never hear about this success on the news channels or from your MD.
I know this only too well as I am Chiropractor. This lack of Chiropractic PR has partially been due to insufficient scientific studies backing up the efficacy of the Chiropractic adjustment.
In the last 15 years, however, several studies have broken the ice, and now give evidence that Chiropractic does in fact help to relieve headaches and migraines and also may treat causation of these conditions. One of such studies is an MRI study conducted by Dr. Scott Rosa.
Dr. Scott Rosa, an Upper Cervical Chiropractor from New York, recently conducted an MRI research on whiplash brain trauma and how that affects brain positioning within the skull. Along with Dr. Raymond Damadian MD, the inventor of the standing MRI, their research has shown that in many of these cases, the top vertebrae of the neck, the Atlas, is subluxated or twisted out of alignment.
Dr. Rosa and Dr. Damadian MRI images demonstrate how this Atlas misalignment actually “causes a pull on the brain and brainstem”. This pull or tugging of the brain can cause a partial blockage of cerebrospinal fluid or CSF and can also reduce cranial blood flow.
CSF is a vastly important component of your brain and spinal cord, in that it lubricates and cushions these structures while also supplying a vast array of nutrients. ***** Until this study, the alteration and blockage of these fluids to and from the brain had never been studied in its relationship to headaches and migraines or for brain health in general.
I was fortunate enough to meet with Dr. Rosa recently in San Jose CA and to view his research first hand. Dr. Rosa then presented MRI imaging of pre and post a chiropractic atlas adjustment that demonstrated the immediate effect on brain placement. An adjustment of the atlas was shown to resolve the maligned cord tension and reduced the pull on the brainstem and brain! I was fascinated to see the pre and post MRIs of these findings offering objective proof!
And to think that a single adjustment can release the tension on the spinal cord and help to unwind and help to resolve brain trauma was really fantastic! The patients in the study reported that they felt much better post atlas adjustment. These findings prompted Dr. Damadian to state that adjusting the atlas (C1) is a missing link in health care.
Chiropractors have always had great success with headache and migraine sufferers, and now Dr. Rosas research has clearly demonstrated the physiology and connection between brain trauma, migraines, and exactly how the chiropractic adjustment is alleviating this condition and changing people's lives.
Recent research is giving great hope to migraine sufferers. Dr. Scott Rosa, an upper cervical chiropractor from New York has been doing some amazing research with upright MRIs. Hes been able to show that when someone has a misalignment in the upper neck, it actually BLOCKS the flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to and from the brain. CSF is important as it is the fluid that lubricates and nourishes the brain, spinal cord, and central nervous system.
This research is consistent with the findings of the National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association, who notice the changes in blood flow to and from the brain with phase-contrast MRIs in migraine patients with an upper neck misalignment.
The obstruction comes as the first few bones in your neck become misaligned and cause a backup of CSF and blood leading to increased intracranial pressure. When this misalignment was corrected by an upper cervical procedure such as upper cervical adjustment, studies have shown that a pressure drop by as much as 28.6%! The Atlas adjustment helps to return CSF flow back to normal.
The idea that improper position of the Atlas vertebrae can cause reduced flow of brain fluids (CSF and blood) due to poor drainage, is under review for a possible causation factor in other conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimers and Parkinsons disease as well.
Every day your body makes around 500 ccs of cerebrospinal fluid or CSF for short. CSF is a special kind of fluid for the brain and spinal cord. The CSF is loaded with nutrient factors and plays an important role in our health. It has many minerals, vitamins, amino acids, and some cholesterol, all of which are essential to the general health of the brain and the central nervous system as a whole.
But when the brain is deprived of these essential nutrients due to misalignment in the vertebrae, it often sends us feedback as headache and migraines. There is no drug or surgery on the market designed to resolve this misalignment and the pain will never stop from returning.
